The Swell
Division is located about eight feet off the floor on the left side of the
case when looking at the front of the organ. A peek inside the Swell box shows the
two banks of pipes totaling 14 ranks. |
|
On the right
side are six ranks of pipes. Ranks from left to right are 8' Oboe,
16'
Fagott, 2' Sweitzerpfeife, 4' Traverseflote, 8' Schwebung (TC), and the
8' Gedackt. Notice how the largest pipes of the 8' Schwebung and 8'
Gedackt ranks are made of wood instead of metal like the rest of the
pipes in the rank. |
|
Here's a
better look
at some of the smallest pipes on the right side, along with the names
of the ranks either stamped or hand written on the pipe racks. Keeping these dinky pipes in tune is sometimes a
nightmare! |
|
On the left
side are 8 ranks of pipes. They are the 4' Klarine, 8' Trompette,
1' Mixture IV, 4' Prinzipal, and the 8' Salicional. Note that the
largest pipes in back are mitered in order to fit inside the case.
Behind the pipes are the swell shutters. |
|
Here's a look
at the small pipes on the left side of the case, along with the names
of the ranks stamped on the pipe racks. Note how dust-free everything
is! |
|
Just above
the
left side are the Swell shutters. This gives the view of things from
the inside looking out. The pipes on the outside are those visible in
the casework of the organ and are part of the Great Division. The
number SW 2820 is stamped in one of the cross pieces of the Swell
shutters. I'm not sure whether this is simply a part number for
Casavant or a numerical mistake by the builder in referencing the opus
number of the organ which is 3820. |
|
Looking up on
the left side of the Swell box and you'll find this speaker aimed
toward the shutters. This is either for the Harp or the Celesta which are two of the digital stops on the organ. |
|
On the right
side above the pipes is this curious device called a Zimblestern. The
center rotates striking a number of high pitched bells in a specific
order, creating a "tinkling" sound. This link to the Encyclopedia of Organ Stops web page will take you to a more detailed explanation as well as a sample sound file. |
